There are more than 100 types of arthritis. Dr. Alan Dayan works closely with NYU's rheumatologists, ensuring that his patients receive comprehensive care for arthritis.

Arthritis is a common disease that causes joint pain, stiffness, immobility, and swelling. It can be painful and debilitating. Dr. Dayan offers treatment for arthritis pain and symptoms, as well as arthritis surgery if necessary, easing the painful symptoms of the disease and helping you get back to doing the things you enjoy.

About Arthritis

Degenerative Arthritis – Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis, affecting more than 30 million Americans. Osteoarthritis causes the cartilage covering the end of the bones in joints to gradually wear away, resulting in painful bone-on-bone rubbing. Osteoarthritis is often more painful in the weight-bearing joints, such as the hip and knee. Osteoarthritis tends to develop as people grow older.

Inflammatory Arthritis – Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is one of the most serious and disabling types of arthritis. It is a long-lasting autoimmune disease that causes the joint lining (synovium) to become inflamed and painful, leading to symptoms of pain, swelling, and stiffness, even at rest.

Rheumatoid arthritis most frequently develops in the hand and foot joints. It can develop in the larger joints, such as the hip, knees, and elbows, and many joints may be involved at the same time, as well as tissues surrounding an affected joint. Rheumatoid arthritis can affect people of all ages but most commonly occurs in women and those over age 30.
