About Arthroscopic Surgery

During arthroscopic surgery, an arthroscope guides the orthopedic surgeon. An arthroscope is a thin tube with a light and a viewing instrument that sends images to a monitor. The arthroscope is inserted through very small incisions to allow the orthopedic surgeon to "see" inside a joint-- without having to open the joint, as with traditional open surgery techniques. Slender surgical instruments can be inserted through the arthroscope to make repairs to cartilage, joint lining, ligaments, as well as to remove loose bone or cartilage.
